AP Policy

The Advanced Placement (AP) Program is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools and colleges and universities. It allows high school students to undertake college-level courses in a high school setting. Students may receive college credit by earning a score of 3, 4, or 5 on a standardized exam following completion of the course.

Great Mills High School will offer 29 Advanced Placement courses during the 2021-2022 school year. Just as the GMHS faculty and staff are committed to this program, they also expect enrolled students and their parents to be as committed.

Therefore, it is understood that:

  • Advanced Placement courses are college level courses.
  • Advanced Placement enrollment will be accessible to all students who meet all necessary prerequisites.
  • Advanced Placement courses are demanding, rigorous, and require dedication and commitment.
  • Summer assignments will be completed prior to the start of classes (for example, reading, writing, portfolios, and/or problems).  Failure to complete the summer assignment is not a reason to drop an AP course.
  • There will be no student-initiated changes after August 1.
  • Changes after August 1 must be teacher initiated.  A conference is required with the teacher, parent, student, and Assistant Principal.

The reason for the August 1 deadline is due to resource allocation. Each year, the master schedule is created based on student course requests. If you request a course and then want to drop it after August 1, we will not have a teacher or the resources to accommodate the drop.
